Sustainability: Dictionary, concepts and references
This month's newsletter is about a topic I've been studying and working on a lot, and just like Quality Management, it has some specific terms: Sustainability.
I know that in order to raise awareness, train and implement, you need to understand the key concepts and know the main references, so I've selected some of the main concepts described in the media on Sustainability. Let's go through them in alphabetical order:
Agenda 2030
Developed by the UN. A global action plan that brings together 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets, designed to eradicate poverty and promote a dignified life for all, within the conditions that our planet offers and without compromising the quality of life of future generations. For more information visit: https://brasil.un.org/pt-br/sdgs
CO2e - carbon dioxide equivalent
Measure resulting from greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories - unit for comparing the radiation intensity of a GHG to that of carbon dioxide
Carbon Credit (CER)
Electronic certificates issued for greenhouse gas emission reductions from clean development mechanism (CDM) project activities or activity programs in accordance with CDM rules and requirements. Each CER is equivalent to one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2e) avoided or removed from the atmosphere. To find out how to buy carbon credits through the UN platform, visit https://offset.climateneutralnow.org/
Sustainable Development / Sustainability
World Commission on Environment and Development - Our Common Future, 1987 - “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”
ESG
Environmental, Social, Governance. The term was coined in 2004 in a publication by the Global Compact in partnership with the World Bank, called Who Cares Wins.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory
A quantitative document that shows how much a company emits from its direct sources (when the company itself owns or controls the emissions, e.g. fuel consumption in company equipment) and indirect sources. In Brazil, companies publish their inventories in the Public Registry of Emissions. To find out more go to: https://registropublicodeemissoes.fgv.br/participantes
ISO 14064

Sustainable Development Goals
Goals generated from the 2030 Agenda. Find out more about the 17 goals at: https://brasil.un.org/pt-br/sdgs

Global Compact
Launched in 2000 by the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, it is a call for companies to align their strategies and operations with 10 universal principles in the areas of Human Rights, Labor, Environment and Anti-Corruption and to develop actions that contribute to tackling society's challenges. Find out more about the 10 principles at : https://www.pactoglobal.org.br/10-principios
Carbon footprint
How much GHG a person or organization emits in CO2e
Greenhouse Gas Report
Document issued by an independent organization or project to communicate GHG-related information
Sustainability Report
Document issued by companies to demonstrate, on an annual basis, what they have reported on sustainability during the year (e.g: Petrobras e Natura )
Material Topics
Themes that represent the organization's most significant impacts on the economy, the environment and people, and human rights

Just as we have playlist for Quality Management on youtube, we also have Sustainability playlist According to the ISO 9001 website, the implementation of ISO 9001:2015 contributes to 4 Sustainable Development Goals:
- Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere
- Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
- Goal 12: Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns
- Goal 14. Conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
